Locomotive discuss new format, return to play

White Sands National Park has reopened to the public with limited services due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Dunes Drive opens at 7 a.m. daily, except on Christmas Day and days when there is a park closure due to weather or missile test, and visitors must exit by 9 p.m., according to the National Park Service.

The Visitor Center and Gift Shop are open to walk-up table service only from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Visitors are urged to maintain 6 feet of distance from other groups and stay on marked trails. They also should park only in designated areas and pack out anything they bring in.

Sunset strolls and group use areas currently are not available. Visitors also should be prepared for limited access to restrooms.

The cost is $25 per vehicle, $15 per person, $20 per motorcycle and $45 for a White Sands Annual Pass. The per person fee is only charged if there is only one person in the vehicle.

Entrance fees are valid for entry for seven consecutive days from the date of purchase.

Holders of the Interagency Annual Pass, Interagency Senior Pass, Interagency Access Pass, Interagency Volunteer Pass and White Sands Annual Pass are admitted free along with three other adults in a private noncommercial vehicle, according to the park’s website.

Also, the Alamogordo Chamber of Commerce postponed the 29th White Sands Balloon & Music Festival, originally set for September, to September 2021.

“The health and safety of our pilots, guests, volunteers, sponsors and staff are our top concerns. And while we are terribly upset about this difficult decision, we must stay dedicated to upholding that commitment,” a statement said on the festival’s Facebook event page.
