“A whole year of messing about would not have been my vibe,” says Georgia Gibson, who has just returned from a gap year before taking up a place to study Italian and Spanish at Oxford.

Instead the 19-year-old, who attended Marlborough College in Wiltshire, completed language courses in Italy and Spain, where she lived with local families; taught at a school in rural Colombia; backpacked through Peru, Bolivia and Argentina; and worked as a tutor and a waitress to repay her parents the £2,000 they had lent her for the adventure.
