THE Boost Mobile Margaret River Pro, the fourth stop on the 2021 World Surf League (WSL) Championship Tour (CT), continued in sizeable conditions on Monday. The day’s competition saw non-stop action with the overlapping format for the men’s round of 32 – with the field is now narrowed to the top 16 men and top 16 women. Unfortunately, the South Coast’s two male hopes, Culburra Beach brothers Owen and Mikey Wright, have been eliminated from contention. This progressed Owen straight to the round of 32, where he was pitted against Brazil’s Peterson Crisanto. And despite registering a two-wave score of 12.60, Wright was bundled out due to his opponent’s 14.76. The South Coast’s hopes now rely on Culburra Beach’s Tyler Wright and Gerroa’s Sally Fitzgibbons, who are both into the final 16 of the women’s draw. The former, who has been shortlisted for Surfing Australia’s Female Athlete of the Year, will take on Costa Rica’s Brisa Hennessy in heat four, with Fitzgibbons set to battle Hawaii’s Malia Manuel in heat eight.
