The Agrihouse Foundation, a pro-agribusinesses NGO in Ghana, in collaboration with the Eat Ghana Chicken Campaign, held a chicken festival to create awareness on the importance of the poultry sector to the country’s economy.

The Ghana Chicken Festival was held on 3 May in Accra, providing a platform for industry players in the poultry value chain to interact and advocate for more consumption of locally produced chicken.

About 95% of chicken consumed in Ghana is imported, and according to the festival’s coordinator Asiwome Biekro, Ghanaian patronage of local chickens would enable farmers to enjoy economies of scale, which would ultimately lower the cost of local chicken. Biekro added that the chicken industry was one of the key areas that could spur Ghana’s economic development, noting that many jobs would be created if the local sector took a 25% market share.

As part of the activities during the festival, a special cooking competition for chefs was held, which saw local celebrities and personalities included in the mix of competitors.
